In 1989, my passion for treating the diagnosis of ADHD was born out of seeing the pain of children diagnosed with the condition being separated from their natural abilities and instead were viewed as disruptive and difficult.
Since that time, I have searched for ways to help my clients diagnosed with ADHD discover ways to use an educational, directive, action-oriented approach to living with ADHD that gives them a sense of feeling powerful again. I then coupled this with teaching clients about neurodevelopmental theory, and how their brain processes information in order to level the playing field for them to feel less “different” or “disordered.”
This approach then evolved into helping clients develop personalized strategies, versus rote recommendations written in a report that many would never read. The next step was to help clients rebuild themselves, emotionally and mentally, from the inside out along the lines of self esteem and self identity. With that said, I recognized that something was still missing; clients were not making sustainable life-long changes they needed in order to reach their potential.
This “missing link” shifted when a dear client introduced me to the Results Coaching System (RCS) of setting goals based in neuroscience, and the dots connected in an optimal way. After 19 years in the field of psychology, I attribute the RCS executive coaching training to adding about 15% to my knowledge and skills-base. I was left in awe about how the system naturally created balance in the brain to move toward insight and action. I now implement this model into my practice with clients as they set year-long goals, both in group & individual sessions. What began as a strategy-based approach has now evolved into a framework of executive goal-setting, weaved with neuroscience, allowing a shift in perception from “disorder” to “functional order. I am witnessing clients accomplish goals and achieve dreams to live much more productive lives in ways I have never seen in my 22 years in the field.
I marvel at how TLEC clients continuing to use RCS executive coaching to re-set and crystalize their personal goals every six months, experience new insights and avenues that open doors to uncharted territory. I feel humbled that I am witnessing their growth beyond the diagnosis of ADHD as they rediscover the curious child they once were. The separation many felt for years because they were labeled the ‘disruptive’ ones or those who ‘processed things differently’ is in the past.
With gratitude, I acknowledge David Rock for discovering the art and framework of combining executive goal-setting and neuroscience.
