As I read an inspiring message from Keith Miller, a dear friend and mentor who has cancer, a flash of insight hit me to dedicate my first and subsequent blogs to him. For years, Keith has supported me in the development of The Life Empowerment Center (TLEC) and has stood by me as I have envisioned “really writing” my first book over the past eight years. You see, it would be easy to point to my own diagnosis of ADHD and say, “here is classic procrastination at its best” or I could simply say “honestly and directly, I am scared ~ scared of what others may think of me.” The courage to write this book is to expose my inner thoughts about the very subject of ADHD.

Keith has taught me to write as if I’m talking to someone in the room who cares about what I have to say, and this is you, the reader: you may be someone with ADHD, someone curious about the nature of what it is or isn’t, a concerned family member, or someone who has simply stumbled upon this blog for a reason.

The bottom line is this - Keith wrote his blog this week about dying, and the courage it takes to knock on death’s door with blind faith, knowing you will be cared for on the other side. It is Keith’s courage which has inspired me to begin writing weekly blogs for TLEC, not as an expert with textbook advice, but as an adult with ADHD.

The focus of my weekly blogs is to show what has inspired me as an adult with ADHD to grow beyond “the edge,” as I call it, to stay focused on the side of thriving. In an effort to manage the ADHD difference I was born with, I have learned not to focus on “the difference” because the majority of the world will not connect with how “I see it” making it virtually impossible to thrive against these odds.

I thank Keith for helping me find the courage to begin writing my weekly blog, placing me squarely with my back against the corner, committing me to follow through, as a testimonial for other ADHD adults to find ways to thrive each week in their own lives.

Until next week,
