The Life Empowerment Center

How can we help?

Send us a message or call TLEC at 512-804-2343 and we’ll contact you regarding an appointment.

The Life Empowerment Center offers an educational, directive, action-oriented approach to psychotherapy, with an emphasis on resolving the emotional distress of ADHD for adults. Depending on what issues bring you to therapy, we will draw from a number of schools of thought and therapeutic disciplines, from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to EMDR to mindfulness. James is as concerned with neural networks as with treating distressing thought patterns. The point is, it depends on you, and what you respond to. Do you connect easily to your imagination? Are you fascinated by neuroscience? Both?  No two TLEC clients have ever been alike. At TLEC, we consider it a privilege to curate the kind of custom therapy that can help you move from survival to “thrival".

In addition to specializing in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), we also counsel clients with cognitive and emotional issues such as:

  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
  • Post-Traumatic Stress
  • Academic Challenges
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Learning Differences
  • Bi-Polar Disorder

This one-session, in-depth consultation is the ideal starting point for those who wonder if they, or a loved one, has ADHD. Or, if you’ve been the recipient of a rapid-fire diagnosis you don’t fully understand–and/or an accompanying prescription you’re not quite sure of–you might benefit from this introduction to whatever version of ADHD truly applies to you. This is a chance to dig into the specific ways in which ADHD has impacted your life to date, particularly if it’s been complicated by concurrent conditions such as depression or anxiety. During the session, you’ll take the Intermediate Visual and Auditory Continuous Performance Test, review your results with us and drill down into your life history, identifying the ways that ADHD has disrupted or enhanced such areas as relationships, career, the ability to set goals and reach potentials. With client's consent, we can share the insights from this session with prescribing physicians and other health-care professionals.

People with ADHD are the original high-maintenance partners, parents, friends and co-workers. Even if you dearly love someone diagnosed with this condition, you probably have times when you get tired of providing 24/7 understanding and support—when you’d actually appreciate some attention for yourself, if that’s not too much to ask. Well, it’s not! At the Life Empowerment Center, we’re committed to staying in step with partners and parents of people with ADHD, helping them build better relationships through education, communication, stress relief and “strategic, therapeutic daydreaming,” among many other methods and techniques we’ve found to be successful. Whether you’re looking for one-on-one insight or a like-minded support group, we believe we can help you lighten the load and reconnect with everyday happiness. Please call or write to find out how we can help.

ADULT ADHD EDUCATION Group (Contact us to be added to Waiting list)

The ideal entry point for adults newly diagnosed with ADHD—or for those who’ve never really gotten a grip on their diagnosis—this webinar provides an overview of all things ADHD over ten weekly sessions. Participants learn the twists and turns of ADHD brain chemistry, with an emphasis on developing personalized solutions to common problems and setting hopeful, achievable goals. Sessions are devoted to organization, time management, workplace and career, couples’ work, medications and self-care, among many other topics. In addition to Q&A at the end of each class, group members are given access to class handouts and outlines, as well as an online forum for peer support.

As adults with ADHD, many of us struggle to manage our symptoms in the real world. Even when we appear to be successful–in business, for instance, or as entrepreneurs or artists–we may flounder in the eddies of the ADHD brain. Sometimes counseling is the best place to begin getting unstuck. At other times, coaching is a better fit. The Life Empowerment Center's coaching process, grounded in neuroscience and informed by David Rock’s Results Coaching System, was developed for the business world, but has proven extremely helpful for anyone who wants to focus on the future–setting goals, balancing work and life, or learning to re-set after a stressful event without devolving into past patterns. As in any athletic pursuit, coaching clients “practice” the skills they learn, encouraged and enlightened by the coach along the way. Typically, coaching is offered in three-to-six-month chunks, making the process short, sweet and effective.

James Ochoa has a new story to tell with new solutions for the emotional distress of adult ADHD. Working from his recently published book "FOCUSED FORWARD: Navigating the Storms of Adult ADHD," James involves and engages audiences, from people with ADHD, to their friends, family and the professionals who treat them. Having dealt with his own ADHD diagnosis, he’s acutely aware that the traditional lecture style—sitting still and paying attention for hours on end—isn’t optimal for ADHD adults. Instead, he provides frequent breaks, sometimes for meditation, at other times for participatory games, enlivening the atmosphere with fast-paced visual imagery and an engaging, conversational style. Participants leave Ochoa’s workshops with a thorough grounding in the science of the mind as it relates to ADHD, but also with a new appreciation of “strategic, therapeutic daydreaming,” and its potential power to reduce stress and generate joy..

COUNSELOR CONSULTATION AND TRAINING (contact us to be added to waiting list)

Designed for Austin area therapists and counselors, this peer support and training group meets monthly over a six-month period at The Life Empowerment Center. James Ochoa envisions the groups as a place where therapists can expand their knowledge of adult ADHD and strategize how best to help clients diagnosed with the condition, from reviewing the latest research to specific case studies to an ongoing forum of new ideas and interventions. The group will provide continuing education credits for LPCs and MSWs, but is not limited to those areas of specialty
